I’m so sleepy but I’m going to try to update with as much as possible on this blog. On the 20th of December I adopted a kitten from SSPCA. It’s a bit of a funny and bittersweet story at the same time if that even makes sense. For quite a while now I’ve been looking for a kitten with Thyl’s exact pattern – she is a bicolor black & white van cat. So the week before last week, someone rescued a very young kitten, shared the pictures of the cat and somehow my twin sister got to it. She contacted the woman who rescued the kitten, and the girl told my sister that she had already brought the kitten to the SSPCA shelter.

My sister then contacted SSPCA, who told my sister that the kitten isn’t well and has “cat flu” so they’ll need to monitor the kitten, and refuse to adopt it out until Friday 20th. On Friday the lady at the SSPCA called my sister, told her that the kitten is available for adoption, so after going around to purchase supplies and kitten food, we went to the SSPCA for me to adopt the kitten. I had to fill in the adoption form while they went to get him. I didn’t even bother reading the parts of the form they had filled in for me, which included his name and date of birth. I only read it when they went in the back to put him in my carrier. I saw that they called him “Bird” and then I saw the “date of birth” section. It said “4-Aug-24” and that’s when I felt so confused. I said “wait, I thought it was a small kitten? 4 months is a lot bigger than I expected.” I don’t even think my sister understood what I was trying to say. I was expecting a 1-month old kitten who looked exactly like my Thyl. When they brought him in, he was already placed inside my carrier, he was a lot bigger/older than I had expected him to be and although he had a white body, black tail and black head with centre-parting, he had 3 spots on one side of his body that Thyl doesn’t have. He also had a blurry left eye – according to the lady there, it got infected by parasites so there’s a possibility that he’s partially blind on that eye.

When my sister finally understood what I was trying to say, she showed them the picture of the other kitten and it was only then that it clicked, that one was brought it by someone else and it wasn’t a sick cat. It’s also a female cat. They quickly brought her out and asked me to choose the one I wanted. It was like Sophie’s choice – how can I now leave behind the kitten that I had intended to take; she was fluffy, was more similar to Thyl and such a perfect, healthy kitten. Then there was the little guy who I had already adopted on paper – all feisty, scared and seemingly broken, who possibly spent 4 months of his young life fending for himself on the streets. Well, I decided to keep him. He’s name is Bartholomew-Démon and it’s been almost a week. He spent the first night in my carrier, then I released him for a few hours that morning. This little guy is incredibly potty-trained, he was crying on the first night to be let out and as soon as I let him out he used the litterbox. He spent the 2nd day outside with the other cats and very quickly realized that Thyl doesn’t like cats. That day was also spent hiding around the house. After the 2nd day he was completely out of the carrier and free to roam. Since Thomas’ incident where he tried to jump into my room through the outside balcony and fell down to the trees, we now keep the sliding door to the balcony closed almost all the time. The cats are all completely indoor cats now.

Bartholomew doesn’t groom as much just yet, he plays a lot and he is starting to calm down a bit in the later part of the evenings when the rest of the cats are settling down for the night. I noticed that his fur is softer, but I hope he starts grooming soon. All cats need to groom! I took him a warm bath the first night he arrived, but I’m not much of a believer in cats needing showers/baths by humans.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to the other kitten, I wish I could take them all but I live in a relatively small apartment so for now, the 3 cats we have here are quite a handful already. I also feed Ebony – the senior cat downstairs, so that takes from the budget.

I’ll try to continue this blog tomorrow, I’m taking a day off. We’re going to try to do a Squid Game 2 marathon as well. We upgraded our Netflix subscription so we better make use of it!
