I had my 2nd Tagalog language session this morning. It’s an online language tuition that I decided to take up and I started this past Monday 21st October. I pay only US$8 (not incl. fees) for about 50 mins of an actual teacher guiding me through lecture, PowerPoint presentations and worksheets. I am given homework as well. It’s well-structured and I sometimes wish all my classes were done this way. My teacher is patient, kind, friendly and professional. I’m currently keeping it to 2 sessions per week because I feel a bit too overwhelmed with the number of new words I need to memorize, I hope that if I can overcome this feeling then everything will start to fall into place. I remember a few things from childhood so I can’t really say I’m an absolute beginner – definitely not like when I was first starting to learn Mandarin or French. I feel as though Tagalog is my soul language, and going back to it is like rekindling a long-lost friendship with someone I actually missed.
For now, I struggle to memorize the new words, I feel as though I’m expecting to just remember the words that I used to know, but I need to understand that there are many words that I learned as a child that I didn’t really fully understood what they meant. So now I have to re-learn them as an adult and I’m expecting it to be easy but it’s an uphill climb before the downward slope, especially when it comes to starting out with languages. It’s really difficult before it starts to get a little bit easier. I can’t roll my ‘R’s, but I haven’t given up just yet.
This past 2 weeks we’ve been busy hosting or entertaining one of my mother’s close friends who came to visit from Singapore. She left the other day but my older sister and her family are now visiting so we’ll be spending some time with them too. As we approach Christmas, I will also be more focused with my retail business, so I told my teacher that I might not schedule any classes for December. Although now that I think of it, it might do more damage than good. I will probably schedule one session per week, and then slowly increase the momentum as we end the festivities.
